The Magic Flute (1975 film)


The Magic Flute Swedish Trollfljten is Ingmar Bergmans 1975 film version of Mozarts opera Die Zauberflte. It was intended as a television production and was first shown on Swedish television onJanuary 1975, but was followed by a cinema release later that year. The film was shown at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival, but was not entered into the main competition. The film is notable as the first madefortelevision film and filmed in thenstandard 11.33 television aspect ratio with a stereo soundtrack.

During the 1960s Magnus Enhrning, head of the Swedish Radio, asked Bergman for possible projects and the director replied I want to do The Magic Flute for television. Enhrning readily agreed and supported the project without hesitation.The characters of Frid and Petra in Bergmans 1955 film Smiles of a Summer Night, and Johan and Alma in his Hour of the Wolf 1968 prefigure his conception of Papageno and Papagena, and Tamino and Pamina respectively in The Magic Flute. The latter film includes a puppettheatre sequence of part of Actof the opera. ........
